Shakhtar Donetsk are a Ukrainian football club and they are most known for their orange and black striped home jerseys. The club are one the best clubs in Ukraine as they have won the Ukrainian Premier League/Soviet Top League on 8 occasions. In the past decade the club were a dominant force in Europe where they won the 2009 UEFA Cup and they have had several world class players to play for the side including Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Dmytryo Chygrynskiy, Darijo Srna, Stipe Pletikosa, Elano, Bernard, Fernandinho, Jadson and Anatoliy Tymoshchuk.
It was founded in 1936 and has been successful in domestic competitions winning USSR Cup 4 times, USSR Super Cup(1983), 5 Ukrainian Cups, Ukrainian Super Cup(2005), the Ukrainian championship 3 times and the Channel One Cup(2006). Shakhtar currently plays at RSK Olimpiyskiy stadium and is in the process of building a new stadium that will seat 50,000 that will be 5 stars under UEFA guidelines.
Shakhtar has played under 3 different names Stakhanovets (1936-1946), Shakhtyor (1946-1992) and FC Shakhtar (since 1992). It was originally named after Oleksiy Stakhanov a legendary coal miner. Shakhtar has always been famous for its willing disposition, team identity, and never-say-die attitude just like this miner.
Andriy Vorobey holds the record for the most goals for the club with 114 and Mykhaylo Sokolovsky holds the record for the most appearances with 485.
